Skatepark Information

URGENT NOTICE:

The Parks and Rec Advisory Committee is currently considering all aspects of the East McIntire Park (EMP) master plan in order to make their recommendation to City Council on what they believe will be the best suitable use(s) for the future of the EMP. This is a pivotal point in the planning of both EMP and the skatepark.
PLEASE go to mcintirepark@charlottesville.org and leave a comment concerning your hopes for the future of the skatepark. Our main points of concern are:

1. The skatepark needs to be relocated with a minimum of closure time and we believe East McIntire is a very well suited location.
2. We want to make sure that the size and features of the park are not reduced as with the last ‘renovation’ (the newer features that replaced the original ramps are less than 50% in number and are also mostly smaller in size).
3. We hope that the skatepark will also be modernized by incorporating concrete construction and design concepts. We also hope that the skatepark can be increased in size in accordance to recommendations for a community of our size: at least 50,000 square feet (the current skatepark is only 20,000 sq ft and the area layout is not optimally utilized).

Please feel free to add any other comments you like but BE SURE to be polite and civil.
PLEASE also tell others (skaters or not) to leave comments in support of the skatepark also. It is VERY important that our voices be heard at this point.

Remember: “A World Class Skatepark for a World Class City”.

Welcome to Freestyles Skatepark Information Portal.

This part of our site has been set up in order to give accurate information on the status of McIntire Skatepark and the moving/rebuilding of the new skatepark.  We know that there are many questions out there about the fate of our skatepark when the Charlottesville end of the Meadowcreek Parkway is finally started. There are many rumors and misinformation currently floating around right now and our mission is to dispel those rumors and clarify the information. Keep in mind that the situation surrounding the Meadowcreek Parkway is very dynamic and has had abrupt changes in course since its inception. We hope to keep you updated on all aspects of the construction (or lack of, or stalls) that pertain to McIntire skatepark and the creation of the new skatepark. You can get good current information on the progress of the Meadowcreek Parkway here – http://cvilletomorrow.typepad.com/charlottesville_tomorrow_/meadowcreek_parkway/

That said, McIntire Skatepark is slated to be moved pending the Charlottesville end of construction on the Meadowcreek Parkway. At this point there is a committee of local skateboarders that are counseling with the city’s Parks Department to decide the best options for the new location of the skatepark as well as proposed design improvements known henceforth as The Green Skate Project.

At this portal you will find all the tools needed to attain accurate ongoing information as we proceed through the process of the skatepark move by navigating the links below. You can find up to date entries on committee meetings, info on our committee and advocates, who is involved and how to become involved. There is also a page provided for you to share your ideas about what you would like to see improved/ changed in the new skatepark; whether they are ideas for new features or suggestions about peripheral issues. You can also check out the ever popular FAQ page to get an easy general rundown of what’s going on.

Please feel free to join in, share your ideas and get involved. The more people who speak up for a bigger, better skatepark; the better the chances are of it coming to pass. The thing to remember is that nothing is guarantied. Get involved; make a change.
